At the risk of sounding superior I don't think this is helping anyone. To me (Mr Johnny Come Lately) I am fascinated by this case. There are so many aspects to it. And its a shame to see it unravelling. If John was introduced to the forum by Ian I dont get the problem. What is obviously a problem is when someone approaches you to get all the info they can out of you, and then cherry pick the dodgy bits and (in a very poor way I have to add), attempt to make you look like a banjo playing idiot that should not be allowed out without a carer let alone guard a nuclear weapons base. I mean that's just rude. And to champion that in the face of overwhelming evidence to the contrary means that the issue has psychiatric overtones to it.
HOWEVER - there are so many un answered questions. Its a shambles lol. BUT the people involved from the outset are here. Its not like we are trying to uncover the meaning of the hieroglyphs. We need to uncover the details so we know what we have. Like the starscope. LMFAO I tried all day yesterday to find a picture of it on various forums. And nope nothing. I cannot believe that. We all know what one is, but we cant find one lol. So how do we even know what it is. How can we say that the meter we have is the right one.
I mean the meter I will liken to a Ford ok. A ford Focus. Now it was a AN PDR 27 - that much we know. But it was written AN/PDR-27 like that. I have found the stores receipt voucher. I even know its stores number. NSN something or other. (Nato Stock Number). SO the An means Army Navy. The PDR bit is the Ford, and the 27 is the focus bit. Ok. However there are various different ford focus cars. and the same is true of the meter. I mean it goes up to T. So written AN/PDR-27/T and it has the previous letters (generations) before it. Now you might think this is no biggy. But the T version I read on one site was a chemical meter as well. This is possible but that means we have to ensure the exact model number. I think I have found it and I think it was an F. But I cannot say for certain.
The tape I think I will make my next task. I want to know when the tape breaks happen. So I can work back from 04:00 and see if I can see what times those breaks occur. If you can do that then you can time their speech, and say exactly or near enough when most of it was said. As long as Halt reported the times correctly.
There are things like the front of the tape they say better leave the car. I have a woodland like that near me. You wouldnt take a car so that makes sense. And yet, you do hear car breaks screech. I mean I dont think I put it on the transcript I may have. But the point is it makes the senario near enough to a logging trail to be picked up by the mike on the recorder. So does that fit with where they remember being. 3 hours 42 mins of roaming around remember so we need to work out exactly where they were not. Then we are left with where they were supposed to be etc...
The 110/120 degress from the site bit. Anyone mapped it on an OS map? From the site?
I have read threads around here and there that say about no background readings taken. I would say (insert raspberry here) to that. Trained to use the instrument you are taught to go through a routine. Tighten cables in case they came un done (thereby ruling out any possibility of a voltage drop induced reading). If you dont the meter can read wrong but also you can get a belt off it enough to make you dribble for 5 mins. The GM tube must be in tact, so you look and see if its broken. Then you check the probe end clear of dirt etc. Then do the battery checks. If thats all ok - good to go.
If ANYONE were going to be naff at reading the instrument it would be HALT i assure you, from long experience. As they move up through the ranks they lose interest. As new bits of kit come in they may learn how to use it but usually they are too busy. So if he was dodgy I would not be surprised. BUT - watching that programme where he and Penniston came back to the site. The bloke gets the meter out and he asks hey hey hey do you still use Roentgens. Obviously we have moved on, but the important bit happened next. The bloke started measuring the ground and the tree and Halt kind of takes over. But what I realised he was doing aside from taking over, was showing me that he realised it would be important to have a background reading. So even he was aware. And besides its also part of the checks. Switch on and make sure you get a reading. That's your background. You don't even think about it.
Well like I said I don't think it helps anyone to fall out. I feel really privileged to have come across this case, I feel really privileged to be enjoying it. And I feel really privileged to be helping in any small way I can.
