I think we are told that LW and Colonel Halt were out on the same night. Possibly a good distance away from each other.

Let's be realistic here. The eastern edge of the forest where all these events took place is not that large. At night, it is very quiet out there.
Although there is uncertainty over where events took place, if Halt and Larry Warren were at two separate locations, these locations couldn't have been more than about 300 m apart. With flashlights, lanterns and lightalls in the forest and all the noise of people make moving about, movement of vehicles, etc, there is no way there could have been another parallel investigation without Halt or others having known about it.
There is no reason to believe either that Halt is not essentially telling the truth or that his tape was edited or concocted somehow.
There are also very good reasons to believe that LW really was out there that night because he revealed to researchers some aspects or events which were not in the public domain at the time and that were subsequently confirmed as having happened during Halt's investigation.
This leads to the conclusion that LW must have been involved that night, for example, when they were setting up the lightalls in the forest clearing (which according to Col. Halt was before he became aware of what was going on out there, about 8 pm), that he probably heard radio communications between Halt's team and others, and that he may have had some view of Halt's investigation of the landing site.
