Halt tape shows the light WAS to the left of the lighthouse

Postby Frank » Fri Nov 12, 2010 9:25 pm

Halt claims that he saw the light 40 degrees to the left of the lighthouse. The tape, however, seems to indicate a heading of 110 degrees.

My investigation of Halt’s tape shows Halt is right – the light that was initially seen at 110 degrees did come to the left, and the evidence is on Halt’s tape. It is in the fragment that has always been translated as “We got one again left”. This translation is wrong. Detailed analysis of this sound fragment, slowing it down and eliminating the noise, reveals that he actually says: “The other one came to the left”. You can listen for yourself here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/5d6aro (the download button is at the bottom of the page, if anybody knows a better file sharing site, please say so. I just picked one.).

The related fragments of Halt’s tape:

Light A, at 110 degrees: SGT NEVILLES: Now it's stopped. Now it's coming up. Hold on, there we go. About a fraction of four foot off the ground...with a compass heading of a hundred and ten degrees.
Light A gets brighter, and travels in their direction with pieces shooting off: LT COLONEL HALT: It's brighter than it has been...It's coming this way. It's definitely coming this way.
MASTER SERGEANT BALL: Pieces are shooting off.
Light B is spotted to their left: SGT BALL: Look to the left!
SGT NEVILLES: Yeah, definitely moving. There's two...two lights. One light in front and one light to the left.
LT COLONEL HALT: OK... pieces are falling off it again
Light B goes off to the right: SGT BALL: It just moved to the right... went off to the right.
LT COLONEL HALT: Yeah ... strange, Auh.
Light A comes to the left: LT COLONEL HALT: The other one came to the left. Let's let's approach the edge of the woods up there. Can we do without lights? Let's do it carefully, come on..
Looking at light A, that just came to the left: LT COLONEL HALT: OK we're looking at the thing, we're probably about two to three hundred yards away. It looks like an eye winking at you, it's still moving from side to side and when you put the starscope on it, it, it's sort of a hollow center right, a d-dark center, it's...it's...
LT COLONEL HALT: Bit like a pupil of an eye lookin' at you, winking. And the flash is so bright to the starscope, that err... it almost burns your eye.

(There is of course a possibility that light A went off and light B came to the left, but that would move the light even further away from the direction of the lighthouse.)

Managed to further improve the audibility - there is noooo doubt about it, he says "The other one came to the left"
It is even clearly audible through laptop speakers now:

Before Sgt Ball says 'Look to the Left' and after he says 'Pieces are shooting off' he says '11 oclock'. So he was probably pointing to something 30 degrees to the left of where they were all facing.

Yes, it seems like the men were focused on a new light at 11 o'clock to their left for a short period and after it was gone, Halt suddenly sees that the other light has traveled to the left and is in a hurry to study it through the star scope (before this one is gone, too).
