Something definitely runs underground from approx the end of Woodbridge runway, opposite Folly House, along the wide forest ride, eastwards towards the farmer's field. Exactly how far, I don't know for sure but there are what appear to be access shafts every 150 yards or so, I've got phots of some of the shafts, taken in May this year. From the brickwork and concrete cappings they appear to date from WW2.
Incidentally, Churchill ordered chemical weapons to be stored in wooded areas close to every east coast airfield from Scotland to Kent. The weapons were to be used as a last resort should Hitler have invaded England. They were to be hidden from bombing raids by the Luftwaffe so must have been stored underground. This means there must have been an underground storage facility under Rendlesham forest - and almost certainly this storage area must have been accessible by tunnels from both bases. The weapons would not have been handballed down a silly little staircase, surely (although we are British and logistics is not our strong point) so the main tunnel was probably wide enough for a delivery vehicle to access. I doubt the govt would have built two such areas close together, so at a guess I'd reckon there was one serving both airfields but bigger than the others. Thus the storage area was probably equidistant from both bases. Perhaps there was no vehicle access from the bases themselves but only from within the forest, near the road. Smaller tunnels might have been constructed to enable the weapons to be moved by trolley or similar, to the airfields.
Does anyone know of anything in Tunstall forest that might resemble a vehicle entrance to something underground?
You can fool all of the people some of the time and some of the people all of the time but you cannot fool all of the people all of the time (Winston Churchill)...causa latet, vis est notissima
