 It is not good for a civilization to grow technologically powerful while lacking global wisdom—either it self-destructs (ending “the computation” prematurely) or spreads havoc into the galaxy. Possibly we now stand at that juncture (("We are too 'technologed'": Ariel school case)). Therefore, the probe(s) might slow our tech progress with new beliefs, religions, or sects. Currently, we are still insufficiently advanced to cause havoc among the stars.
