This is what is usually known as the RAF Cosford case of 1993, and is worth watching as an exposé of Pope's limitations as a UFO researcher (or even a reliable UFO commentator, for that matter).

Pope has declared: “It seems that an unidentified object of unknown origin was operating in the UK Air Defence Region without being detected on radar.” However, serious investigators have been aware for a long time that the sightings were caused by the re-entry of the rocket that launched the Russian Cosmos 2238 satellite into orbit, combined with the misidentification of a police helicopter by a meteorologist at an RAF base an hour and a half later - see

The programme was made by Channel 5, who dragged an unwitting Ian Morison of Jodrell Bank into it to give the programme an air of authenticity. They did not present Ian with the full evidence and so he, too, went along with what can only now be described as bogus claims. Shame on Pope and Channel 5.

I don't but others do. It's a complex case because there were a whole series of events spread over quite some time. Everything came to a head on the night of 1990 March 30-31 when there were widespread sightings by police and an aerial “chase” by Belgian Air Force F-16 fighters involving radar contact with an unidentified target. This is reckoned to have been sparked off by misidentifications of bright stars and planets while the radar returns were due to atmospheric effects and equipment malfunction. More here:

Hi Ian

I wouldn't even go as far as saying Mr Pope was a UFO researcher in the true sense of the word.
Whats he ever done apart from giving quotes to the media and doc makers that all say nothing. He is one of best fence sitters you can meet.
Now i don't dislike Nick as i have had some correspondence with him and he has been friendly and helpful on certain subjects, but he does trott out time after time stuff we already know.
To my knowledge he has never researched to the depths our forum members have and are still doing. However, there is money to be made on the lecture and TV doc circuit.
