Actually, yes, if it was a military aircraft and was communicating with ATC!
Most of the spotters I knew/know in the area, when not actually standing at the fence, had very expensive scanning receivers at home, switched on 24hrs a day (often linked to cassette recorders), listening for anything 'interesting' inbound to either base. Like I said, very little got missed. You only have to visit the museum and look at the photos of visiting aircraft to see how efficient the 'spotter' network was.....and this was in the days before the Internet!
It it was of alien origin I doubt: a) they would have heard anything on their scanners or b) been in the slightest bit interested anyway.

...and if plane spotters had that kind of kit then imagine what toys the big boys had to play with at Chicksands, Bawdsey, Watton.....to name but a few.
