Visit to the forest - transport

Postby Gordy » Sun Nov 28, 2010 9:48 am

I know there are quite a few people travelling to this event by train and are going to need to hitch a ride to the forest. Can we make a list of those who need a ride so we have an idea of numbers. Thanks.

I'll probably have to borrow or rent a car that day, so I should have room for 2 or 3 people. I can let you know a few days before hand.

Because Christmas Day and Boxing Day are on Saturday and Sunday, the 27th and 28th are public holidays in the UK. I don't know for sure if this will make a great deal of difference but it might mean there will only be Sunday services on buses and trains. Also, there are major engineering works on the London Underground that have been affecting weekend tube (subway) travel across London for months. These works are on-going so there could well be difficulties with travelling across London on the 27th and 28th. This will affect anyone travelling up from Gatwick to Victoria on national rail or into London from Heathrow on the Picadilly Line, then trying to get up to Liverpool St station for trains to Ipswich (Can go from Kings Cross on trains to Kings Lynn but getting to KX can be just as bad). If anyone is flying in on the 27th or early on the 28th it would be well worth checking the Transport for London (TFL) website and also the National Rail Enquiries website for updates on the travel situation. Even if being met and driven up by car there could still be snags, especially if there is even the smallest amount of snow.

Oh, and this could be an omen, a snowflake landed on Hertfordshire this morning so quite obviously everything has now ground to a halt. God forbid that one should land on the greater London area over the Christmas weekend. If that happens, everythng will be closed until Easter at least and travel to anywhere by road, rail, air etc will be all but impossible. The outer London area of the UK cannot cope with even the tiniest amount of snow (or even 'the wrong type of snow') or temperatures below 0 deg c. So for those of you used to -25c and several feet of snow who intend travelling to Woodbridge via London - be prepared to fall about laughing. You won't be able to get anywhere of course but you'll have a great story to tell the folks back home.

Call me cynical but if the cold weather persists (as well it might) to get to Woodbridge from almost anywhere in the UK in late December will be a challenge in itself.

Thanks for letting us know, I wasn't aware that the 28th was a public holiday.
The biggest problem transport wise this time of year, is trying to get through all the traffic caused by the millions of people heading back to the shops, who are suffering retail deprivation from Next being closed for 2 days.

I had to dig the car out from 2 foot of snow over the weekend, but it was still school as usual on Monday morning. If the UK ever gets hit by a really bad winter, it will go bankrupt

Well I will probably be able to take a few, but will confirm a few days before.

I wouldn't worry about getting from Woodbridge to the forest. If the usual incompetence and ill-preparedness that pervades the UK almost every winter (... 'as we keep telling everyone each year, we aren't used to this...') continues for the next few weeks, that alone will be enough to prevent anyone from getting anywhere near Woodbridge in the first place!.......Gatwick closed, hundreds of trucks either abandoned or stuck on the M25, train schedules in chaos... all for what? A few inches of snow in the southern counties. Scotland and the north have it far worse and they manage to cope. It's farcical - and national disgrace.

I will be taking my car, so I have space for 3 people (4 if you include the boot lol).
Can you let me know who needs a lift to the forest.

If there's quite a few people who need transport to the forest and back to Woodbridge then perhaps a coach or minibus could be arranged?

We have thought about renting a minibus but that will add to our overheads, and less money for the charity. If we sell all 350 seats I'm sure we can budget in for a minibus. Only 100 tickets to go to sell out!.

Well I don't know when our American friends are planning to fly in, but it has just taken me 2 days to get to the UK, a journey that normally takes around 5 hours total. Bloody nightmare!

It is! The road conditions are terrible. I hope the event still goes ahead; some recordings or a live stream would be nice too!

I'll certainly try and get some recordings!
BTW, I should have a car to give 2 or 3 people a lift out to the forest, but not 2 or 300 hundred.
Cheers
