Silvertop posted this in the Cobra Mist topic but I think that it deserves its own thread. Charles Halt, Larry Warren, Steve La Plume, Peter Robbins and Bill Birnes all participate in the discussion - this is an important broadcast. There's also a recorded interview with John Burroughs.

*A fascinating podcast so far. Charles Halt's mention of 'meddling' by "the powers that be" and the "powers that we don't understand" has me intrigued.

This was a pretty good discussion, with a few good phone calls. It was a shame they didn't air any of John Burroughs' pre-recorded interview. It's interesting to hear that Military Intelligence was possibly involved in supressing information and possibly more. Even though there are a lot of disagreements with the group it was still great to hear them discussion their own opinions.

On a side note I thought the professionalism of the broadcast was very poor during the airing of Nick Pope's pre-recorded interview. It did make me laugh quite a bit. It's also interesting that there are still plenty of sightings going on in the area. Sadly I wasn't lucky to see anything when I lived on both of the bases, in the early 90s, as a child.

In the third hour of the programme, at 18m 45s a question is read out from one "John from the UK" who notes that Col Conrad has said he was monitoring the radio during Halt's expedition to the forest but failed to see any of the lights reported by Halt. I suspect this John is known to us on this Forum but under a nickname. It's not clear whether Halt was aware of this negative sighting by Conrad before.

This point is followed by a phone call from Tim Egercic who was on duty in the Bentwaters WSA during the incident and strongly contradicts Halt's claim that beams of light came down into the WSA. "I was there and it didn't happen," is what he says in effect. He asks Halt how he knows that a light really did shine into the WSA and Halt has to wriggle and admit he only heard it secondhand. Unfortunately I fear this is not the only example where Halt has repeated secondhand and unreliable information.

I noted what Col. Conrad said four years ago and I thought the same thing.

You may want to look at LAEG. There is nearly two pages on Timothy Egercic. He was monitoring the radio transmissions the third night from a building inside the WSA.

You may want to buy UFOs and Nukes - Extraordinary Encounters at Nuclear Weapons Sites by Robert L. Hastings. There are about 30 pages dealing with Bentwaters-Woodbridge-Rendlesham Forest Case. He interviewed Egercic and Halt.

You may also want to listen to a podcast from Earthfiles, on what John Burroughs saw and heard while the beams were coming down in or near the WSA.

From these sources, I gathered what happened. Also, Egercic said there were sightings on four nights that week.

There's a short chapter on Egercic in Georgina's book. From the way she writes you would think he was a positive witness to something unusual happening, but listening to his own words on that recent phone-in he gives quite the opposite impression. Taken together, Conrad's and Egercic's accounts are highly damaging to Halt's assertions that beams came down into the WSA, which we can now see are unfounded.

The claims for OSI involvement are equally dubious. "John from the UK", as he was called on that podcast, has emails from Halt in which it is clear that Halt's "evidence" for OSI involvement is simply based on what he has heard from others such as Penniston. Halt himself has always said no one ever asked him further about the case, so he cannot know first-hand whether OSI were involved. Chuck DeCaro was unable to establish OSI involvement and I have never come across any such evidence myself in over 25 years. It's another part of the Rendlesham mythology and a further warning not to take any of these claims seriously without proper verification.

I can imagine that it is hard to tell from a distance whether the beams came down exactly in the WSA or not. Apparently there was something in the air about half a mile from the WSA and someone even saw a "large craft".

Steve's report of a large cigar-shaped object as large as a football field that came directly overhead a few nights later is also interesting. (Such a shape clearly matches a lighthouse, so now we now lighthouses do fly - sorry Mr Halt ..

But seriously, in such complex cases you can expect that the witness statements do not match exactly. The question is, what do you conclude from that?
1. The "it just can't be true approach": Each mismatch indicates that they exaggerate, suffer from hallucinations or even lie.
2. The "Sherlock Holmes approach": The witnesses do not have photographic memories but somehow there is a scenario that matches their statements to a large extend.

I would try 2 first before jumping to 1. Would a sceptic like Halt write a memo to the MOD stating a triangular craft was seen it all they saw was some space debris burning up in the atmosphere, a light house and some stars? Surely Halt - a well-educated man determined to debunk the whole affair - would have been able to determine that it was just the lighthouse after an investigation of several hours in the woods.

Nevertheless, before concluding anything you must get the facts right (or a right as they can be in such a case). I highly respect Ian's critical attitude in trying to obtain the truth; like so many others he has contributed a lot to this case.

You should also pay tribute to the work of James Easton, who has now disappeared from the UFO scene, in finding the original witness statements and tracking down various other witnesses such as Chris Armold; and the work of David Clarke and his colleagues in obtaining the released of the Ministry of Defence file on the case

Confirms there was just a light apparently hovering over the trees for hours. Nothing coming down into the WSA.
