Old scraps of info - do they mean anything more now?

General discussion about the Rendlesham forest incident

Postby puddlepirate » Mon Feb 04, 2008 2:42 am

Admin, thanks for that - interesting stuff.

Does anybody know anything at all about stories of motor vehicles being driven in the Orfordness / Bawdsey areas coming to an abrupt halt because the engine electrical systems developed a sudden fault - which cleared after a few minutes? I seem to recall reading or seeing something on tv about this many years back but cannot now find anything to support those stories. From what I can recall from what I read or saw, such incidents seemed very commonplace at the time.

Good idea Admin

As you know the landing lights damage which is at best second hand information sounds strange. Surely from the descriptions of the damage that i have heard, it would take a crew to repair them, not just one sparks up a ladder with his screw driver.

I have wondered for some time if the BT research centre at Martlesham Heath is in some way connected to this mystery.
I know there are under road cables connecting the BTRC to the Ness.

Also if you take a ruler and draw a straight line between the BTRC and the Ness, the line goes dead centre through Rendlesham Forest.
The BTRC is bristling with dishes and antenna on its roof. Also they were pioneers in directed microwave technology.
My mother was friendly with the wife of one of the scientists who worked there and he would not tell his wife what he was doing other than it was highly classified government work!!
Were they sending some sort of beam tests from one to the other that crossed over the forest? It could only be done when flying had stopped for Christmas.

Silvertop - if your question is related to the 'fan' type markings in the photo. they are from the old Cobra Mist array.

Thanks for the aeriel views silvertop

Its rather ironic to say the least. For arguments sake, lets prosume that there was some sort of beam test between those two points. Beams don't bend they go in a straight line, which in this case was right accross the forest. Some thing between point A and point B happended which was possibly a freak phenomena not expected.

Was the pyramid object in the forest part of that beam test?

Quite right puddlepirate, they had been dismantled by 1977, but there could be other 'contraptions' on the ness since.

Hi all

In Larry Warrens book, he mentions seeing a pilot in his flying suit with an insignia badge that looked like a flying saucer/UFO, [see his drawings]he then goes on to say that the badge now looks like the F-117 Night Hawk viewed head on.

Was there a Night Hawk at one of the bases and, was it the aircraft that Halt says he was not allowed to see or go near????

I have been doing some digging with my aviation mates who said it was possible that a F-117 was in the UK for some 'clandestine' tests? at that period, but more likely that it was based at BAe Systems at Warton, reason being is that it had a British flight control system. Did it pay a visit to Woodbridge and had a mishap?

The Aircraft was a C-5 that came in Sunday night. It landed at Bentwaters and had it's own Security.

That may explain Halt's remark that he was not allowed near but what about the Pilot that LW said he saw with a strange looking badge that looked like a UFO on his flight siut. Or is Larry mistaken.

RE - Cobra Mist array. Just to note that the beam was directed North East out over the sea, not south west over the land.

See - http://www.users.zetnet.co.uk/Ray.Flint/cobra/cm.htm

Also the patch, first 2 patch drawings in LW's book resembled several patches worn by members of the 81st. I highly doubt that the Team Stealth patch would have been worn that openly in 1980. And of course theres the 1st flight date of Number 780 which took to the air on 18 June 1981.

Hi Wolf

We were talking post Cobra Mist, long after it was dismantled.

Good point re the Sqd badge. Can we find any of the badges worn by those pilots at the time which could elliminate Warren's claim. We must though bare in mind that there were often visiting aircraft, not only from other USAF Squadrons but some times from other NATO countries.

In your introduction to this new thread you quote the Clarke family who said there was abnormal [extra] activity in the forest by US airmen for weeks. Was this at night or any time and where do the forestry commision workers fit in here? They must have been at least inquisitive, so what did the USAF tell them? Mind your own business! Bearing in mind that the USAF were actually trespassing!!

This isn't actually to do with Rendlesham but I thought it worth mentionng because it illustrates what goes on.

Source: http://robocat.users.btopenworld.com/halo.htm

On 26 September 1994, there was a "major incident" at RAF Boscombe Down on the south coast. An aircraft made an emergency landing and the wreckage was immediately taken into a hangar and covered with a tarpaulin. Apparently the SAS were called out to secure the area. The next day, a C-5 cargo plane flew the debris out. Many reports claimed that the aircraft was an "Aurora", but an eyewitness reported that the aircraft was: "A Stealth bomber, of a type similar to the B-2, but about the size of a Tornado."

Boscombe Down is the main test base for DERA, and the MoD claimed that what crashed was a Tornado testing a classified radar decoy. However, it seems that there is no classified decoy project, which casts doubt on this version of events.

Could it be that we are focusing too much on the USAF and things American (notwithstanding the last few posts about Martlesham and the 'ness) and the twin bases and in so doing are overlooking our own 'stealth' projects? Apparently, we designed the stealth technology - which we gave to the US because we, the UK, couldn't afford to develop it. Perhaps, if you pardon the pun, we are failing to see the wood for the trees.....

Hi John,

I would be interested to know the exact dates the C-5 came in and what it was carrying at that time. Can I also ask you John are you still involved with the military in anyway or just enjoying your retirement on the golf course :D

Sunday the 28th and no one knows what was on the C-5 it was parked in a secure area and had its own security. Also there was allot of activity in the woods after that for several days. The back gate was left open all night. How do I know this because I was posted on it M-W they put me on it because I was involved in the incident. My instruction were not to call anything in on the radio if anything happened just use the phone. There was allot of helicpter's flying out over the area and they had some vechicles that were going into the woods. Rumor and I say rumor because I was not told this by anyone in charge that it was the people from the C-5 to include the helicopters that were in the air. Also rumor had it that they also did some work inside the weapons storage area. Nothing and I repeat nothing that I heard or was told about was taken out of the woods. I cannot to this day say who were in the vechile's that came in and out of the gate it classified and again I donnot know if they came from that plane. Also I still to this day can not commet on what I saw going on over those 3 days again classified. Redsox I am retired for almost 4 years. And as far as why I can't talk about what I saw at the gate it is simple I was told I could not period ever. I was posted there because I was involved in the incident before and the only thing I was told I could not talk about was who I saw and what I saw. I would never have talked about it until Halt talked about it.

Hi all

Heres a scrap of info that i remember reading, but can't remember where.

Somebody said when describing the object in the forest that it looked a bit crude or old fashioned in its construction!

I suspect that this will piss off the guys who made!!! Just joking.

I think this is an important element.

    Sunday the 28th
lot of activity in the woods after that for several days.
not to call anything in on the radio
lot of helicpters flying out over the area
vechicles were going into the woods
people from the C-5 to include [sic] - JB do you mean the people who arrived in the C-5 were also being flown in / or flying the helicopters that were in the air
also did some work inside the weapons storage area
cannot to this day say who were in the vechles that came in and out of the gate [classified]
I do not know if they came from that plane (C-5?)
Also I still to this day can not comment on what I saw going on over those 3 days - JB, do you mean the three days prior to the 28th or the three days after the 28th?

The events described by JB seem to suggest a major search and/or clean up operation related to a weapon of some kind

Interesting because Penniston didn't mention tiles when he described the object, he just said it looked and felt like smooth glass.

So taking these observations at face value means there were 3 different objects seen over the 3 nights. Its got to be the Vodka.
